Part 61

Ready for take off

Part 4, Lets go Shopping!

Things you need and things you don't need

You're going to eventually need a headset, but I don't recommend getting one yet. If the school has one to borrow or rent, I suggest you do that. They can be expensive and you'll want to shop around a bit. But more importantly you want to make sure you are going to stick around long enough to need it. Ebay is full of expensive headsets that people started their training with and didn't finish. Don't be that person. Wait a few flights and make sure this is for you.

Part 3, The first flight

So you've picked a school and an instructor, now the real fun begins.

1st day, go down early (try to do this every day, as the instructors time is money, this is their bread and butter and they only make enough money for bread and butter, actually butter is a luxury on a CFI salary). By being at the airport early, you aren't rushed and stressed. You'll be prepared. I recommend showing up at least 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled start time.

Part 2, Finding an instructor

So now you have found a school, lets start working on finding an instructor.

First thing to understand is that your instructor likely just earned his/her flight instructor rating. Here in the United States we tend to do things a little backwards. In order to get a "real" job, you need hours. So most new pilots will teach till they have those hours.

Flight training and how to get started, Part 1

So you've been sitting on the ground looking up for too long. You've made the decision to join that prestigious club, Pilots, the highest form of life. You've made the first step in a very rewarding endeavor. But you probably have no idea what to do from here on out.

I'm going to try to make sense of it all for you and give you your very first check list, something you will come to have lots of experience with (checklists that is).

Glossary of aviation terms

When you first start your training, you'll hear all sorts of random acronyms. The following glossary will give you a head start with some definitions to make sense of it all.

FAA - Federal Aviation Authority - This is the federal government organization that ensures our skies are safe. Tread carefully, the FAA can be friend or foe.

AME - Airman Medical Examiner - This is a special type of doctor specially trained to ensure you are safe to be pilot in command of an aircraft.
